Pets are for life.
Before getting a pet, please consider the following: Making an informed choice when searching for a new pet is paramount to a good outcome. After all, pets are for life, and a little prior homework and research may save some heartache later on. The better prepared the new pet owner is for the changes to come, the more likely a strong human-animal bond will develop. So, before choosing a pet please consider the following:
  • Are you ready to take care of a pet financially?
    Costs include:
    • Spaying and neutering
    • Annual vaccinations and various preventive medications
    • Quality food/treats for a healthy pet
    • Annual license fee
    • Emergency veterinarian costs
    • Boarding/pet sitting during vacation times
  • Is there a particular breed you prefer and do you understand the breed's special needs?
  • If you want a puppy or kitten, can you take the time it requires to care for and train a young pet? If not, have you considered adopting a mature animal?
  • Who will be the primary caretaker? Is this person mature enough, physically able, and willing to undertake this task?
  • Has each member of your family discussed the role in caring for the new pet? Are there any allergies that could be affected by the pet?
  • If you are renting, does your lease allow for pets?
  • In the case of a dog, does your home have a fenced yard? If not, do you have adequate time to exercise/play with your pet? Will you be able to keep the dog indoors where it can be with its "pack"?
  • What happens when you go on vacation?
One must think these issues out. Getting a pet should be a well thought out process not done on a whim because it looks so cute.
